• Your shower – Take a shower over a bath and upgrade your shower head to an energy saver model. You will use less water in a shower then you will by taking a bath. That means less hot water usage and in turn less energy to heat the water. Bath tubs take a huge amount of water to fill up, leaving you with much more energy needs. That is unless you happen to take very long showers and in that case, try to cut down on the length of your shower for sheer improvement in your energy bills quickly.

• Laundry – When washing clothing, consider washing in the coldest setting allowable for the fabric and look into replacing your current model washer and dry with energy efficient units for long term savings and conservation. This also means no over dry clothing; set your timer to alert you as soon as the laundry is dry rather than when the timer ticks on. Plus only wash clothing in full loads. Smaller loads just waste water and money in energy. You may also want to consider new detergents that claim to be able to wash your laundry with just as much benefit in cold water.

• Your cooking habits – The way that you cook also makes a difference. In the summer, use the outdoor or indoor grill to keep the heat from the oven out of the home. In the winter, back breads and make dinner around the middle to late afternoon when it is the coldest. This will help to keep up your home. Your cook top should also be used more often then your oven as it uses less energy to work. Look at energy ratings on your cooking alliances and grills.

• To conserve automotive fuel, start by checking the air pressure in your tires. If your tires are not filled correctly, you will not get the most mileage for your vehicle. If they are under or over filled, you could be wasting money. If you are not sure, check your owner’s manual for specifications. Check your tires at least once per week. And before you head out for home improvement projects, check around first and find your hammer, duct tape and other materials before you buy more. You may find what you need around the house without wasting gas and time running around town.

• Change your oil regularly, per your manufacturer’s guidelines. Doing this regularly will allow you to get the highest function from the vehicle including in gas savings.

• Drive correctly. Do not step on the gas pedal hard. Ease into speed. Drive at the speed limit which has been created to help you to save gas. If you drive quickly and start quickly, the vehicle needs to use more fuel and that wastes money in your pocket.

• Most experts agree that there is little fuel savings from more expensive qualities of fuel. Stick to the lower costing product unless your vehicle specifies a higher quality is a must.

• Driving with the windows up or down does not matter as much as having the air conditioning on full blast. Even on the freeway, keeping your windows down and the air conditioning off is much more cost effective.

You can easily add these into your every day usage and see benefits right away from doing so. Energy conservation does not have to be hard or challenging, but should be smart.

As a university or college student, finding an off-campus student apartment can be an extremely exciting, but often overwhelming, experience. Paramount Properties wants all of Ottawa’s students to find the best possible student apartment – that’s why we’ve put together a quick checklist of all the things you should look out for while you’re getting the grand tour of your possible new apartment.

What to Look For:

·        Are there three-pronged electrical outlets in every room? And more importantly, are there enough outlets for all of your computers / video games / cell phone chargers / lights / etc.?

·        Do all the apartment appliances work? Remember to check the freezer and whether the elements on the stove heat evenly.

·        Are the doors and locks in reasonable condition?

·        Don’t forget to check the plumbing. Test out the taps and showerheads for hot water and water pressure, and be sure to check the sinks and tubs for cracks, leaks, rust or water damage.

·        Remember to check the windows, too. Do all of the windows fit properly, or is there a draft? If so, how will your apartment heating costs be affected? Is there proper ventilation? Do all the windows in the unit open? Are there locks on the windows that are at street level?

·        Is there enough storage space? If there is a locker in the basement, find out who has access to that area and what kind of lock is on the door.

·        If possible, visit the apartment at different times of the day to see what the noise levels are like. A seemingly quiet student apartment during the day could actually be a noisy headache at nights or on weekends.

·        How many bus routes run close to the apartment? Do they go where you need to get to?

·        If laundry facilities aren’t provided, where is the nearest laundromat?

Questions to Ask the Landlord:

·        Are there any other students living in the building?

·        Have there been any major repairs or renovations done in the past year? Are any major repairs anticipated in the near future?

·        Who will be responsible for apartment repairs (even small, minor ones) – you or the landlord?

·        Can the landlord or superintendent be reached at any time during the day in case of emergency?

·        How is the rent to be paid – by mail or directly to the landlord? Cash or cheque?

·        Who pays for heat and other apartment utilities?

·        Is a parking space included in the rent, or will it cost extra?

·        Do you have to sign a lease? If so, for how long?

·        Are the washers and dryers shared with any other people?

·        What appliances are included in the apartment rental?

·        Can the apartment building handle cable/Internet?

·        Are you allowed to repaint the walls?

·        Are pets allowed? If so, which types of pets?

Yes, it’s a lot to pay attention to as you’re touring a possible new apartment – especially when you’re focused on the bigger questions such as “how many bedrooms” and “how much rent”. But, if you try to ask most of these questions as you’re looking around, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to make the best decision about which apartment to rent.

Most parents of school-age children are forced to confine their family vacations to summer months, Christmas holiday and Spring break. Other families can choose to take their vacations at any time that is appropriate to their personal preferences.

When people consider their vacation or weekend getaways, few understand the true range of options they really do have available to them. Many people think their only options for lodging on vacation is limited to: hotels, motels, cabins, RV’s, travel trailers, and tents. But the truth is that there are a few more options that most people never even consider.

Condominiums, also referred to as Condos, are another great lodging option to consider. But, just speaking the word Condo brings to mind for many the concept of Time Share Condos. Of course, that is one option with a Condo, but we are going to look at the other options as well.

Condominium Residency Arrangements

A condominium, very literally, is very similar to an apartment. It is a fully self-contained living arrangement, with a living area, bedrooms, private balconies, and a full kitchen; and most condos contain all of the amenities, including big screen televisions, DVD players, high-speed Internet access, and other creature comforts we generally have in our homes, such as washers and dryers. Many condos also have hot tubs or Jacuzzis in the apartments.

Condos are basically full apartments, located in areas of prime real estate, such as Las Vegas on the Strip, or many other locations around the world on beachfront property. Condos generally provide additional benefits such as swimming pools, weight rooms, restaurants, and other high-value goodies.

We are going to look at four types of Condo purchase arrangements in this section.

1. Condominium Ownership ? Condo ownership costs include the purchase price of the apartment and yearly fees to cover maintenance costs.

2. Condominium Timeshares ? With a timeshare, the basic concept is that more people can afford them, because the cost of ownership is split among several owners on a per week basis. When someone buys a timeshare, they are buying a 1/52nd ownership of the Condo for a specific, pre-designated calendar week. With a timeshare, one is entitled to take over the property beginning on a specific calendar date, and they must vacate the property at the end of the week.

3. Condominium Rentals ? Instead of timesharing a condo, many people opt to rent a condo, which frequently requires a purchase of a specific weekly period, although many condos provide flexibility so that you can decide which week you would like to rent. Some condo owners will allow individuals to rent by the day, but those have a much lower availability, than the condos that rent by the week. More on this later in this article.

4. The Dreaded Seminar Timeshare ? Some companies are so desperate to find people to listen to their sales message that they are willing to put prospects up in a timeshare condo for the weekend or week, so long as the person(s) agrees to attend a specific number of sales presentations during their stay.

Benefits of Condos Over Hotels

The greatest benefit of condominiums over hotels is two-fold.

First, condos are fully self-contained, providing kitchens, spacious living and all of the luxuries of home to their guests. Many also provide high-speed Internet and data access to their business-class guests. For many folks, the full kitchen is the greatest advantage of a condo, in that, they will not have to eat nearly every meal in a restaurant, enabling the vacationer to spend his or her money on attractions rather than on restaurant foods.

The second greatest benefit for condominiums is three-fold: location, location, and location. Condos are generally located on some of the best prime real estate properties in the world. For example, City Center in Las Vegas is located on the Strip between the Bellagio Hotel and Casino and the New York, New York Hotel and Casino. Beachfront condos exist in nearly every major beach destination in the world. Condos are available in San Francisco, Chicago, NYC, Atlanta and Miami, just to name a few metropolitan locations. And locations are not restricted to U.S. destinations; in fact, condos are available in nearly every travel destination of the world.

Benefits of Condos Over RV’s and Travel Trailers

RV’s are nice, but considering the cost of fuel these days, they are seldom a great option for most travelers. A friend of mine recently priced a RV for a planned family vacation, and he found the cost for eight days would easily exceed one thousand dollars, plus mileage over 200 miles, plus fuel. At eight miles per gallon, his planned trip of 500 miles one-way would have easily translated into 125 gallons of gasoline and more than $400, just in fuel costs, at current fuel prices.

Sure, the RV is still more spacious than a car during a long road trip, but for the cost, renting a Cadillac for the trip might just make more sense. Given the claustrophobic nature of his wife, he felt that train or airplane might make more sense for his roundtrip transportation needs.

Transportation costs aside, the travel trailer and RV are both generally a bit confining in the space considerations. Certainly, the RV beats the travel trailer hands down in this department, most of the time, but when you consider the stress of stuffing a family of five with three young children into a RV, there is never enough space available for the sanity of the parents.

Benefits Over the Great Outdoors

With smaller travel trailers, travelers are still stuck with cooking outdoors. Sure, the travel trailer might be easier than the tent to set up, but travel trailers usually have small kitchens, if they even have a kitchen at all. Cooking outdoors for a family is more of a challenge than many in today’s world want to consider.

The limited amount of refrigerated storage is another area that is usually greatly strained with the use of the average travel trailer or tent camping experience. Going into the woods with a ice chest is fine for an afternoon trip, but once that trip expands beyond the life of the ice in the chest, then food options drop off considerably. This is the greatest cause of stress for people planning such trips. They always need to manage how they can maximize their food store, within very limited-size refrigerated storage containers.

In today’s modern world, it is frequently impossible to escape the reliance we have come to have for modern technology. This leads to a need for power supplies that can accompany the traveler, to keep them plugged into their gadgets. Tents and small travel trailers do not accommodate this need in many instances.

The Purpose of Vacations Is Rest and Relaxation, Which Is Sometimes Lost

For many of us, the purpose of a vacation is rest and relaxation. But, as we have seen above, the challenges of taking long trips can sometimes produce more stress than relaxation.

Another friend told me that he was very much relieved when his parents decided not to take any more summer vacations “for the family.” He said that by the end of the first day, every member of his family was ready to strangle the other. By the end of day two of their six-day traveling vacations, everyone wanted to go home, but his dad was stubborn to a fault. His family had tried nearly all of the above options: tents, travel trailers, RV’s, hotels and motels.

Even today, twenty years later, he cannot fathom a family vacation like his parents took, without his blood pressure going up. A few years back, he had tried the condominium rental route, and he has never looked back.

He told me that for him and his young family, the only vacation choice they will ever take advantage of is the condo rentals. He said the money he saves by not going to restaurants, generally covers the extra costs of the condominium. He said the enjoyment that he and his family experience, is far greater than what it would be if they forced themselves to live in a hotel room for a week. He said the extra goodies that the condos generally provide help him to give his family a much more rounded and robust experience. He says the added space and convenience of the condo experience permits him and his wife to relax more during their out-of-state vacations.

Making a Great Vacation Even Better

I am in the business of providing wholesale travel packages to the consumer market. I got into this business myself, because I love to travel with my family. Because I am able to save so much money on my own travel, it enables me to take my family on more trips and vacations than I had previously thought I could do.

The one thing I love most about my job is that I can give others the power to do as I do. I set my friend up with a discount condo card package, and now he is able to get his condominium rentals for much less than he was previously able to do. Depending on his trip destinations, he was generally paying $650 to $2500 for one week in his choice destination.

When I was able to hook him up with the discount condo card package, he paid one small upfront fee to my company of $250 for the condo card. On one trip, he stayed in a five-star condo resort and was able to get the condo for a week at just about 25% of what it would have cost him to rent it at retail cost. On another trip, he was able to stay in a beachfront condo for one week, and it only cost him the taxes that were due on the condo for his one-week stay, a whopping $199.

All told, my friend has so far taken two one-week vacations, and between plane tickets and condo costs, he has only spent about half of what he spent on his previous trip, the one he took before I set him up to take advantage of the travel packages I sell.

The Greatest Reward

The greatest reward for me in what I do, is knowing how I am able to help people get more out of life for less money than what they would spend on their own, without my help.

In conclusion, let me ask you two very important questions. First, how much did you spend on your last family vacation or weekend getaway? And secondly, how much are you going to have to spend on your next family vacation or weekend getaway?

Every time you start your car, the dashboard lights flash quickly and then disappear as the engine begins to rumble. This car behavior is so routine that you probably don’t even notice it anymore, unless one of those lights stays on. Dashboard warning lights are your car’s vital signs and they provide a quick way of letting you know that there’s a problem. A lit warning light on the dashboard can mean anything from a door being open to engine trouble. It’s important to decipher the meaning of the light to avoid possible car failure on the road or an unnecessary and costly visit to your mechanic; especially if it’s something you can fix such as refilling the windshield washer fluid. 

The first thing to do when a dashboard light goes on is to make sure you don’t have the hand brake on. If it’s not the handbrake, the next thing to do is to check the car manual. Most car manuals have an illustrated page at the end showing the dashboard symbols and their meanings. The most common dashboard lights encountered by puzzled drivers deal with the following problems: 

LOW BRAKE FLUID:  

  If the handbrake is off but the brake light is still on, the brake fluid level may be low or there may be some other problem with the brakes. In this case, it’s best to have your car checked by a mechanic to correct the problem.   

LOW OIL LEVEL: 

If the oil light is on, the oil level may be low and you will need to pull over or take your car to the nearest gas station and check the oil. Adding oil should solve the problem but if the light stays on, you may have an oil pressure issue which will require immediate attention by a mechanic.  

ANTI LOCK BREAK SYSTEM PROBLEM:  

  If the ABS light is on, there is some kind of malfunction in the ABS system. This shouldn’t affect normal brake function but it should be checked by a mechanic.   

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT:  

The dreaded check engine light may indicate a malfunction in the engine or in the transmission. It’s best to have your car checked as soon as possible even if the car appears to be functioning normally; engine or transmission problems can escalate quite quickly.  

  AIRBAG LIGHT:  

  This light indicates a problem with the airbag system and should be checked as soon as possible. Ignoring this light could prove deadly if you happen to be in an accident and the airbag doesn’t deploy.   

CHARGING SYSTEM: 

If this light is on, your car’s battery is not charging properly. According to aa.com, a car related site based in the U.K, a problem with the charging system could be caused by slack battery terminals, an alternator failure or a broken or loose alternator drive belt; problems with the drive belt could cause overheating and result in damage to the engine. The car should be checked by a mechanic as soon as possible.  

  TEMPERATURE LIGHT:   

If this light is on, the car has probably overheated or is close to overheating. The best thing to do is to shut off the air conditioning, pull over and let the engine cool. According to Via Magazine, AAA traveler’s companion, you should never try to remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot because this could cause you to be sprayed with superheated coolant.  

  If you pay attention to a lit dashboard warning light and try to correct the problem right away, you can save time, energy and money. It may be inconvenient to thumb through the car manual or to have your car checked, but ignoring small problems will result in much larger problems down the line and you’ll wish you had listened to your car.

A new apartment is an exciting prospect. It means new friends and neighbors, new attractions and, hopefully, a better place to live. To make sure that your new apartment remains exciting and doesn’t yield nasty surprises, there are several things to check that you might not have considered both within the apartment and in the area you’ll be moving to.

Inside

Check the faucets and showers in the kitchen and all the bathrooms to make sure there is good water pressure and that the hot water heater is working.

Make sure the toilet flushes correctly; there’s nothing worse than a toilet that doesn’t flush properly or that constantly leaks water into the bowl.

Check all the lights in the apartment to make sure they work. If they don’t, have the landlord replace the bulbs first, but it may be the fixture itself.

Check the level of cell phone reception in all the rooms in the apartment. These days, many people use their cell phones almost exclusively; checking now can spare you aggravation and annoyance later.

Check all the appliances to make sure they are working properly. Make sure the refrigerator is cooling, the stove and oven work and the microwave, air conditioner and heater.

Check for signs of any insect infestation. Look in the cabinets, around the baseboards; the apartment should be well cleaned.

Listen for sounds of outside traffic. How soundproof are the walls? If you’re near a busy highway, or in an urban area, traffic will be a constant.

Check the carpeted areas for wear and tear. Are there any discolored or damaged areas? Is the carpet pulling up in any corners or pulling away from any spot? Also check for water damage on the walls or ceilings at this time.

Outside

Check out the reputation of the landlord with other residents. Do they take care of issues in a timely manner? Do they respond to complaints quickly?

Check out the road system and public transportation. This will give you a good idea of how long it will take you to get to specific places like work, school, the grocery store or the gym.

How safe is the area? Do your homework and find out what the crime rate is like. Is the community gated and patrolled at night?

What are the area’s schools like? A quick check on the Internet will tell you if the local schools get a passing or failing grade.

Does the complex provide a playground or park? If not, is there one nearby where you can walk your dog, let the kids play or just relax in the evenings?

Where will you wash laundry? If a washer and dryer is not provided, or at least hookups for them in the apartment, where can you wash your clothes?

The first and most important rule is that you actually walk through the apartment you want to rent, and not a model of one just like it. In this way you can point out to the landlord any items that need to be replaced or maybe just repaired. You will not be held responsible for any of these problems at a later time. Now let’s take a look at that checklist:

· Make sure there are smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in place and working.

· Check under the kitchen and bathroom sinks to determine if there are any leaks in the plumbing. Take a look at the toilet and faucets for leaks, as well. It wouldn’t hurt to turn on that faucet to see if the water pressure and temperature is satisfactory. (If there is an in-unit water heater there is less chance that you will run out of hot water, but these units are few and far between. Usually one is shared by multiple units.)

· Look at all the appliances in the unit to make sure they work properly. If there is not a washer or dryer in your unit, make sure the area they are in is well lit and only accessible to residents who live in the building.

· Check for any evidence that there may be unwanted rodents (you know who I am talking about) or insects inside of drawers and closets.

· Look for any water damage, this could bring about future mold problems (peeling paint or wall paper might be another indication of this).

· Locks and doors should open and close easily.

· Whatever you do, don’t rush the inspection.

After all the deposits are paid and the lease signed, you may not have a lot of extra cash to decorate your new apartment, putting your own personality stamp on it. If you are very creative, however, you can find ways to glam it up a bit without spending a lot of money.

You can get inexpensive furniture at a thrift shops or some ready to assemble furniture at a local discount store. There are these new no-sew pillows that are available at craft stores that help change the look of a couch or chair from drab to fab. And you can always spruce up the walls with some family photos or even some wall decals in the shapes of flowers or some other object. Just do something to make it your own. This is going to be your new home for some time and you want to be comfortable and happy here.

Besides keeping the outside of your vehicle looking like brand new you also want to make sure you periodically clean the engine compartment. There are many reasons for doing this, including helping prevent rust, to check for oil or fluid leaks and to detect belt wear. To soften the grease and grunge that collects in the engine compartment you should start the engine and let it run for a few minutes and then shut it off. If you can just hold your hand on engine without burning, then it is warm enough to clean. The proper temperature for cleaning the engine is warm but not hot.

While the engine is cooling down you will want to cover the openings on the motor that you do not want to get water in. These include the air intake/ air filter, the distributor, the coil and the oil dip stick/breather. You can use baggies and rubber bands to cover the openings. You also want to check the tightness of the oil filter cap, power steering cap, windshield washer fluid cap, battery filler caps and all other caps.

Now that you have the engine warm and everything is sealed you then spray the engine and engine compartment with a high quality non petroleum based degreaser. You should start at the bottom and work up, that way you won’t be getting your face covered with degreaser.

Allow the degreaser to set for about three to five minutes and then use a 100% cotton towel or a soft brush to start removing the heavily soiled areas. You then re-spray and re-brush any areas that need additional cleaning. Once the entire engine and engine compartment have been cleaned you rinse it thoroughly with water. You don’t have to use a high pressure sprayer a gentle spray will work just as well and you won’t have to worry about getting water in sensitive spots.

Once the engine compartment is clean you can remove the plastic bags and rubber bands. You then dry any puddles and aluminum parts with a soft towel. Use paper towels to thoroughly dry the battery. You now start the engine and allow it to warm up. This will dry the rest of the engine and will evaporate any moisture that has collected.

Once everything is dry and completely cooled you should wax the painted areas of the engine compartment, but not the engine. If the undercoated aluminum areas are dull or have whitish corrosion you can use a mild metal polish to help restore the finish. At this time you should check the battery terminals to make sure they are clean. If they are not clean you can disconnect the cables and clean both the cable terminals and the battery posts with a wire brush.

Then you should check all hinges, throttle cables and shocks to see if they need a thin coating of non silicone lubricant. Then check all fluid levels and remove any stray baggies and you have completed cleaning your engine.
